The impact of technology on us has increased considerably in the past years. Many of us have become addicted to certain technologies. But what happens when technology is used to mislead? In this case we can say that it is not exactly in our benefit. Such a situation is encountered when we talk about deepfake technology. What this really is and how it can affect us, we will see in this article.
What is deepfake technology?
The word "deepfake" combines the concepts of "deep learning" and "fake", being a form of Artificial Intelligence. Deepfake is a kind of AI exploitation and machine learning. These are used to give the impression that someone is doing or saying certain things. Of course, all of this is untrue and it is making deepfake an unethical practice. Counterfeited images, videos, gifs or other such types of content are also part of the deepfake category.
Manipulates social media content
Regardless of location, people around the world spend a lot of time on social media. They see a multitude of content types daily. Among them, manipulated content can be easily introduced. People cannot always differentiate valid content from manipulated content. Thus, through social media posts they can be easily fooled. From opinions to behaviors, all of these are influenced through deepfake technologies.
Can influence elections
In the case of the political field, at least in other countries, this technology is very present. This usually appears during election campaigns and embody politicians in various poses or by saying certain things. All of this being false, practically imagined by the creator. However, when the final deepfake product comes into contact with the population, the results are not favorable. Most of the time, it creates confusion or even revolt, influencing the opinion or preferences of voters.
It distorts the image of public figures
Going further, deepfake does not stop at the political field. The creators of deepfake continue by damaging the image of public figures in various areas of activity. Whether they are singers, actors, media people and others, none of these categories are bypassed by deepkfake manipulation. All these types of deepfake content can seriously damage the reputation of these people, affecting the opinion of their fans. Fortunately, many websites have certain tools that detect and remove deepfake content. Thus, they are not really efficient yet.

Deepfake technologies can be quite harmful when it comes to influencing the population. Due to the accuracy of the manipulated content, people become very easy to handle. Despite the continuous efforts made in the websites, but also in the social networks, deepfake is still a harmful and dangerous factor. If it is not controlled in time, the consequences may be worse than we could imagine.
