Will Artificial Intelligence take away our jobs?
Lately, many of us have heard about Artificial Intelligence (AI), about how much it has changed our lives, but at the same time, there have been many rumors that AI will take away all of our jobs. Well, the panic based on the notion that artificial intelligence will kill jobs in the future might be … artificial.
It is true that, at this moment, AI is displacing some jobs but it’s not going to take away jobs. It will more likely change what human workers do.
Let’s take a look at history, from the start of human civilization up until the industrial revolution when most of the people still worked in agriculture. Nowadays, those engaged directly in agriculture are in a very small percentage, in most parts of the world. This is thanks to technology, which does a large part of the work that farmers had to do.
You may be wondering why we don't see farmers who have lost their jobs, while being upset about technology. Thanks to the effects and evolution of technology, these people can become something else, like pilots, computer engineers or writers.
It’s obvious that AI collaborating with humans is already happening. The Harvard Business Review completed research involving 1,500 businesses which revealed companies benefit the most when humans and machines are working together. Humans have certain characteristics machines cannot take on, and vice versa. A simple example is a person making a joke as a response to what someone has said, a natural process for a human being, but difficult for a machine to comprehend. While processing thousands of gigabytes of data is easy for a machine to do, but virtually impossible for a human.
New technologies such as Artificial Intelligence have the sole purpose of automating the various processes and meanwhile, coming up with new and creative innovations to translate this capable potential of AI into a useful one. There have been numerous products launched by the various start-up businesses around the world to demonstrate the power associated with AI, latest being the ‘self-driven cars’. It would be interesting to watch how technology takes over humanity in a jobless society where the currency is machine-generated and intelligent machine agents will replace our existence.
Concluding, we should all agree that machines will not take over our jobs, but they will likely remake them in wonderful and surprising ways.
